Climate change is escalating the risks of many weather-related extreme events, with communities and local governments in the crosshairs and insurance markets at a breaking point.
Carolyn Kousky will explore the history of disaster insurance, the important role it plays in communities’ post-disaster economic recoveries, and the current challenges facing housing markets across the U.S. related to insurance. Despite the pressures on the insurance sector, private, public, and nonprofit actors are partnering to develop innovative policies and tools that can help create more resilient, insurable communities in the future.
Hosted by the Weitzman Student Planning Association, the event will be especially relevant for students interested in climate adaptation and mitigation, community and economic development, and real estate finance.
