The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Inflation Reduction Act, and the CHIPS and Science Act launched a new era of U.S. industrial policy, investing hundreds of billions of dollars in manufacturing, clean energy, infrastructure, and domestic supply chains. But what have these investments actually accomplished? While government agencies, researchers, and advocacy groups have produced a flood of reports, the evidence is scattered and often difficult to compare.
This seminar brings that evidence together to assess what we know and what we still don’t about private investment, job creation, wages, and regional economic growth. We will discuss how consistent, transparent metrics can separate evidence from narrative and provide a clearer picture of what these policies have achieved. We will also explore new research methods that can better identify their causal impacts, helping policymakers understand what worked, what didn’t, and where U.S. industrial policy should go next.
The EconClimate Lab advances forward looking economic policy ideas that make energy policy benefit workers, communities, and the American economy.
The conversation will be moderated by Heather Boushey, professor of practice at the Kleinman Center and former member of the Council of Economic Advisers and chief economist to President Biden’s Investing in America Cabinet.
