SUMMARY:Introduction to Integrated Assessment Models
DESCRIPTION:Summary\nJoin us at the University of Pennsylvania for a workshop on integrated assessment models (IAMs). Better understand how climate mitigation models work and how they inform NDCs. \nIAMs are models used to analyze interactions between climate\, energy systems\, land use\, and the economy. Over the past 25 years\, they have been the backbone of the IPCC climate mitigation reports. \nThis is a paid workshop. \nStructure: \nFour-day introductory workshop on integrated assessment models and a guided tour of the new Scenario Compass Database (17 hours total) \nObjectives: \n– Get an introduction to global and national integrated assessment models.\n– Understand the theoretical foundations and recent developments in integrated energy\, land use\, and climate mitigation.\n– Critically evaluate the strengths\, limitations\, and policy relevance of IAM-based research.\n– Critically interpret IAM-derived results publicly available in the scientific literature. \nFacilitator\nRoberto Schaeffer\, Full Professor of Energy Economics\, CENERGIA \nHost\nKleinman Center for Energy Policy

SUMMARY:Launch of Machine Learning for Environmental Event Detection (MLEED)
DESCRIPTION:The University of Pennsylvania’s Penn Development Research Initiative (PDRI) – DevLab invites you to the launch of Machine Learning for Environmental Event Detection (MLEED)\, a new AI-driven platform that analyzes global news data to identify environmental shocks and track societal responses.\nEnvironmental shocks are increasingly shaping migration\, governance pressures\, and humanitarian needs\, yet policymakers still lack timely\, systematic data on how communities and governments respond. Using large-scale news scraping and machine learning classification\, MLEED produces monthly data across dozens of developing countries on 16 dimensions of environmental stress and adaptation\, including migration responses\, governance actions\, and community coping strategies.\n\nThe in-person event will feature a live demonstration of the platform and a discussion with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on applications for policy and decision-making.\n\n*Please note this event is in Washington\, DC*\n\nLunch reception to follow

SUMMARY:Climate Policy in Practice: Institutions\, Markets\, and Society
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is not only an environmental challenge but a fundamentally social and political one. This one-day conference features new research and policy discussions on adaptation\, climate finance and market design\, political mobilization\, and the political economy of deforestation and conservation. By fostering dialogue across disciplines and between researchers and policymakers\, the event aims to generate evidence-based insights to strengthen climate governance and adaptation strategies worldwide. \n \n
