The minor in Energy and Sustainability provides students with broad coverage of technical and societal issues in energy and sustainability. It is designed to help students become leaders in developing technologies for a more sustainable energy future.

A Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics (MEAM) offers a rigorous and immersive research experience designed to cultivate future leaders in academia, industry, and government. Administered by the Graduate Group in MEAM, the program provides a tailored curriculum that supports individual interests and promotes deep exploration of complex engineering challenges.

This master’s program is an engineering degree with a strong technical focus, preparing students to become interdisciplinary leaders pioneering solutions in energy, climate, and sustainability. All students will complete one introductory course and participate in a hands-on, project-based component, which can take several forms. From four breadth categories—Environment and Climate Solutions, Clean Energy Technology, Society and Policy, and Economics and Innovation—students will select one concentration (three courses) and take one course in each of the remaining categories.

The MBA major in Business, Energy, Environment and Sustainability (BEES) is designed to provide in-depth foundations for those interested in the complex relationships between business and the natural environment, management of environmental risks, and the business and economics of energy. Students will be ideally suited for the ever-expanding set of careers in sustainable business, energy companies, green investing, energy banking, consulting, the non-profit world, and the government.

VIPER is a dual-degree program that positions students to make a significant impact in the development of sustainable energy science and technology while cultivating an interdisciplinary perspective in science and engineering and forming lasting connections with a community dedicated to solving the world’s energy challenges. Students pursue a Bachelor of Arts in the School of Arts and Sciences and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Science, Technology & Society examines the social contexts and consequences of science and technology, equipping graduates with multidisciplinary skills for careers in business, law, government, journalism, research, and education.

Mechanical Engineering & Applied Mechanics is the study of forces, deformation, and motions of solid bodies and fluids (liquids and air), heat & energy generation and transport. Mechanical engineers are equipped with knowledge to design and develop everything you think of as a device, mechanism, or machine, including wind turbines, rocket engines, robots, 3D printers, micro-engines, nanomotors, and more.

This certificate draws on the interdisciplinary nature of energy policy education at Penn, and draws from a comprehensive set of courses across several schools at Penn, with a foundational offering in the Weitzman School of Design. The certificate is intended for professional graduate students currently enrolled at the University interested in adding an understanding of energy policy to their list of educational qualifications.

The MEAM MSE degree launches the next generation of leaders in technology and innovation. The program’s interdisciplinary approach prepares our graduates to produce groundbreaking solutions that address the complex challenges of tomorrow’s technological landscape. Students in this concentration apply mechanical engineering principles to advance aerospace engineering, cooling of microelectronic equipment, energy conversion and power generation, materials fabrication, and thermal control and treatment of living organisms.

The concentration in Impact, Value and Sustainable Business (IVSB) is designed to provide in-depth foundations for those interested in how business activities affect natural, human, and social capital – and how these impacts influence risk, opportunity, and sustainable business performance. Graduates will be well equipped to shape strategy, innovation, valuations, investment flows, and policy.
