Summer Heat Stress Studies Volunteers Needed

The Health and BioBehavior Lab (HaBBLab) is seeking research study volunteers for a study on summer heat stress in urban Philadelphia! 

The research study is being conducted to understand the physiological stress cost of low-intensity exercise in a hot outdoor urban environment. The study aims to assess differences between perceived and measured heat stress in a population of healthy adults. You will receive an InBody body composition scan, VO2 max capacity estimate, and $100 gift card for participating in this study.  Your participation will last for two days, either consecutive or non-consecutive but within the same week, depending on your preference and availability.

A research team member will follow up with you to schedule your participation; you are under no obligation to participate after taking this intake survey, nor are you obligated to fill out the survey.

Further details:

If you decide to join the study, you will be asked to complete the following research procedures:

  • Walk, then run on a treadmill while equipped with a Cosmed K5 device (breathing mask) to estimate your VO2 max
  • Wear an Actigraph (wrist), heart rate monitor (chest strap), and carry a bag with environmental monitors during your walk
  • Walk 30 minutes on a treadmill inside at your own pace
  • Walk 30 minutes outside on a day up to 95 degrees F, ending your walk near Penn’s campus
  • Complete surveys and answer interview questions about your personal experiences with heat and heat-related stressors
  • Provide 7 saliva samples over two days of the study
