The University of Pennsylvania’s Penn Development Research Initiative (PDRI) – DevLab invites you to the launch of Machine Learning for Environmental Event Detection (MLEED), a new AI-driven platform that analyzes global news data to identify environmental shocks and track societal responses.
Environmental shocks are increasingly shaping migration, governance pressures, and humanitarian needs, yet policymakers still lack timely, systematic data on how communities and governments respond. Using large-scale news scraping and machine learning classification, MLEED produces monthly data across dozens of developing countries on 16 dimensions of environmental stress and adaptation, including migration responses, governance actions, and community coping strategies.
The in-person event will feature a live demonstration of the platform and a discussion with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on applications for policy and decision-making.
*Please note this event is in Washington, DC*
