The Penn Science Policy and Diplomacy Group (PSPDG) and our friends at the Scientist Network for Advancing Policy (SNAP) are currently running a nationwide initiative called Stance on Science, a grassroots, scientist-led project that will help bring science policy into the election conversation this November. Teams from over 40 states across the country have been hard at work generating science policy questionnaires to send to candidates for federal, state, and local office to be published and publicized as a non-partisan voter resource of candidates’ science policy positions.
This includes the Pennsylvania team, which has now prepared its questionnaire and is getting ready to send it to candidates across the state. To do that effectively, we need more volunteers with ties to different parts of PA! If you grew up in the state, or if you have family living in the state, particularly outside of a major urban center, we would greatly appreciate it if you would volunteer for this initiative and help us contact candidates. Candidate contact info, an email template, and our state’s science policy questionnaire will be provided. If you’re interested, please email Miles Arnett (mjarnett@seas.upenn.edu) and fill out this form to get involved!
Relatedly, if you would like to get involved in a Stance team for another state, particularly one where we are currently short on volunteers (Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Rhode Island), you are still more than welcome to get involved! You don’t need a background in policy or advocacy to help out with any or all of these items, just an interest in science, community engagement, and making important election information more accessible. Just fill out this form to join.
This work is strictly nonpartisan, and we do not endorse candidates or tell people how to vote. Our goal is to make science policy more visible and understandable, because policy decisions have real impacts.
